What dental prostheses are
A dental prosthesis (denture) is a removable restoration that replaces missing teeth along with a portion of the gum. It’s used with partial or complete tooth loss, when the patient wants to regain the ability to bite, clear speech and a natural-looking smile. Partial dentures fill in individual gaps, while complete dentures restore the entire dental arch in edentulous patients. Replacing missing teeth also prevents the remaining teeth from shifting and bone loss.
Types of dental prostheses
The dentist chooses the type of prosthesis based on the extent of missing teeth, the conditions in the mouth and the patient’s expectations.
Acrylic denture
Partial or complete, based on an acrylic plate. More economical, but less stable than a skeletal one.
Skeletal (framework) denture
Based on a metal framework with clasps, secured to abutment teeth. More stable and comfortable.
Complete denture
For edentulous patients — restores the entire arch and rests on the gum (suction effect).
Implant-supported denture
Anchored on implants (overdenture) — greater stability and comfort close to that of natural teeth.
Acrylic or skeletal denture
Both types of partial dentures replace missing teeth, but differ in construction, stability and price.

How making a denture works, step by step
Making a denture involves several visits, usually spread over 2–4 weeks, with the denture being made in a laboratory.

Traditional or digital impressions as the basis for the model.
- Try-ins and fitting
Several visits to adjust the bite, tooth positioning and fit.
- Delivering the denture
Handing over the finished denture along with instructions for use and care.
Caring for a dental prosthesis
Proper care and an adjustment period determine the comfort and durability of the denture.
- Clean the denture after every meal with a brush and denture cleanser.
- Initially avoid hard and sticky foods and excessive pressure.
- Remove the denture at night to give the oral tissues a rest.
- Come in for check-ups — over time the denture may need adjustment or relining.
Contraindications to dentures
Making a denture is preceded by treatment and hygiene treatment — in some situations the procedure needs to be postponed.

- Allergy to acrylic materials (rare).
