Scope of orthodontic treatment

We plan orthodontic treatment in connection with the health of the teeth and gums and with prevention. Click a topic to see the details and prices.

When to see an orthodontist

Most malocclusions are acquired and develop in the first years of life, although some are genetically determined. An initial bite assessment can be done once a child has a full set of baby teeth (around 2–3 years of age). Key orthodontic consultations are recommended between the ages of 7 and 9 (the first stage of tooth replacement) and between 10 and 12 (the second stage). In adults, orthodontic treatment is sometimes part of the preparation for prosthetic treatment, because a correct bite is a prerequisite for a lasting restoration.

Why malocclusion is worth treating. An incorrect bite is not only a cosmetic issue. Crowded teeth are harder to clean, which increases the risk of tooth decay and periodontal disease, and malocclusion can cause speech problems and overload of the temporomandibular joints. The starting point is an orthodontic consultation (panoramic and cephalometric X-rays are taken on referral at an external imaging center), often combined with a dental check-up.

Types of orthodontic braces

The choice of appliance depends on the type of malocclusion, the patient’s age and their readiness to cooperate. The basic division is between fixed and removable appliances; you will find details and prices on the orthodontic braces page.

Metal

The most durable and most economical option, bonded to the teeth for the duration of treatment; effective for every type of malocclusion.

Esthetic

Made of composite or ceramic in a color close to the teeth, so they are less visible than metal braces.

Self-ligating

More comfortable to wear; they often shorten treatment time and require less frequent check-ups.

Lingual (tongue-side)

Fitted on the inner surface of the teeth, so they are completely invisible from the outside.

Aligners (clear trays)

Transparent trays changed every 1–2 weeks and removed for eating and brushing; used for moderate malocclusion in adults.

Removable

Used mainly in children, for prevention and early treatment, while the jaws are still growing.

How orthodontic treatment works

We carry out treatment according to a predictable, multi-stage plan, from diagnostics to the retention phase that stabilizes the result.

  1. Consultation and diagnostics

Medical history and oral examination. The X-rays (panoramic and cephalometric) needed to diagnose the malocclusion and establish a treatment plan are taken on referral at an external imaging center.

  2. Preparing the mouth

Before braces can be fitted, any tooth decay must be treated and the gums must be healthy, if necessary as part of conservative dentistry.

  3. Fitting the appliance

Selection and fitting of fixed or lingual braces, or provision of a set of aligners, together with oral hygiene instructions.

  4. Follow-up visits

Regular appliance adjustments and professional hygiene care every 3–4 months to monitor progress and protect the enamel.

  5. Completion and retention

Once a correct bite has been achieved, the retention phase follows: a retainer (fixed or removable) stabilizes the result and helps prevent relapse.

Hygiene care every 3–4 months during treatment. The brackets and wires of fixed braces make cleaning the teeth harder and increase the risk of tooth decay and enamel demineralization. For this reason, we recommend more frequent professional hygiene care during treatment: scaling, sandblasting and fluoride treatment to strengthen the enamel around the brackets.

Orthodontics and other fields of dentistry

A correct bite is the foundation for a lasting result of esthetic and prosthetic treatment, and in some cases orthodontic treatment requires cooperation with a surgeon.

Frequently asked questions about orthodontics

At what age should a child see an orthodontist?

An initial bite assessment can be done as early as around 2–3 years of age, once the child has a full set of baby teeth. Key consultations take place between the ages of 7 and 9 and between 10 and 12, while baby teeth are being replaced by permanent teeth. If anything concerns a parent earlier, it is worth coming in without waiting.

Can an adult wear braces?

Yes, orthodontic treatment can be carried out at any age. Popular options for adults are aligners (clear trays) and lingual braces, which are invisible to others. The prerequisite is healthy periodontal tissue and treated teeth.

How long does treatment with braces take?

Treatment time depends on the type of malocclusion and the appliance, usually from a little over a year to around 2–3 years. Self-ligating braces often make it possible to shorten it. After the braces are removed, a retention phase follows to stabilize the result. The orthodontist presents a detailed plan after diagnostics.

How much do braces cost?

At the Adent clinic, fixed metal braces cost from PLN 2,900, ceramic braces PLN 4,300 and self-ligating braces from PLN 4,300. The cost of treatment also includes the treatment plan and follow-up visits. You will find full, indicative prices on the orthodontic braces page and in our price list.

Fixed braces or aligners: which should I choose?

Fixed braces are effective for every type of malocclusion, including complex cases, and do not depend on the patient’s discipline. Aligners work well for moderate malocclusion in adults: they are invisible and removable, but need to be worn for about 22 hours a day. The orthodontist makes the choice after analyzing the malocclusion.

Do my teeth need to be treated before braces are fitted?

Yes, this is an absolute prerequisite. All teeth must be free of tooth decay and the gums must be healthy. Active periodontal disease and inflammation rule out starting orthodontic treatment until they are under control.

Do teeth have to be removed before orthodontic treatment?

Not always. With severe crowding in adults, the orthodontist may recommend extracting premolars to create space for the remaining teeth. The decision is made after analyzing X-rays and models, and many patients are treated without any extractions.

How should I look after oral hygiene with fixed braces?

Fixed braces make cleaning the teeth harder, so in addition to daily hygiene (interdental brushes, a water flosser), professional scaling and sandblasting every 3–4 months are recommended, more often than usual. This helps prevent tooth decay and enamel demineralization around the brackets.
