Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that treats diseases of the dental pulp and the tissues around the root tip, which in practice means root canal treatment. Its goal is to remove infected pulp, clean the root canals and seal them tightly so that the patient’s own tooth can be kept instead of extracted. What Modern Root Canal Treatment Involves
At Adent, root canal treatment follows a predictable, multi-step protocol, with rubber dam isolation and control under the microscope.
- Diagnosis and X-ray
Assessment of the tooth and a periapical X-ray at the clinic; if needed, a panoramic X-ray and, in difficult cases, additional imaging on referral to an external imaging center; assessment of the number of canals.
- Anesthesia and rubber dam
Local anesthesia, followed by placement of a rubber dam: a rubber barrier that protects the canals from bacteria in saliva.
- Canal shaping
Opening the pulp chamber, locating the canal openings under the microscope and mechanically shaping the canals with nickel-titanium instruments.
- Disinfection and irrigation
Chemical cleaning of the canals with disinfecting solutions that remove bacteria from the entire canal system.
- Canal filling
Tight filling of the canals with gutta-percha and sealer to permanently cut them off from bacteria.
- Tooth restoration
Rebuilding the tooth crown with a filling or, in the case of extensive damage, a ceramic crown on a post and core.

Frequently Asked Questions About Endodontics
Does root canal treatment hurt?
Root canal treatment is performed under local anesthesia, which keeps discomfort during the procedure itself to a minimum. Discomfort before the visit usually comes from the inflamed pulp, not from the treatment. For a few days afterwards the tooth may be tender when biting. This is normal and passes.
How many visits does root canal treatment take?
Uncomplicated treatment can be completed in a single visit. Teeth with multiple canals, retreatment or the presence of an abscess often require 2–3 visits to thoroughly clean the canals and allow them to heal before they are filled.
Does a tooth need a crown after root canal treatment?
Molars and premolars after root canal treatment should be protected with a crown, because they become brittle and prone to fracture. Front teeth with minor damage can often be restored with a filling alone. The dentist decides after assessing how damaged the tooth is.
Is treatment under a microscope better?
The microscope increases the precision of treatment: it makes it possible to locate all the canals, assess whether they are passable and remove fractured instruments. It is especially useful in teeth with complex anatomy and in root canal retreatment.
What is root canal retreatment (re-endo)?
Re-endo is the repeat treatment of a tooth in which previous root canal treatment did not lead to healing. It involves removing the old canal filling, cleaning the canals again, disinfecting them and sealing them tightly. It is more difficult than primary treatment and is often performed under a microscope.
