Occlusal splints are specialized dental devices used to protect teeth from wear during sleep and to alleviate symptoms associated with temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ). They are made from transparent, hard material and individually custom-fitted to the shape of the patient’s teeth. In cases of severe bruxism, a botox injection procedure is even recommended. An appropriate amount of Botox is injected into the hypertrophied masseter and temporal muscles.

How to Care for an Occlusal Splint

  • Daily Cleaning: After each use, clean the splint thoroughly with a toothbrush and toothpaste.
  • Storage: Store the splint in a clean, dry place, preferably in a designated container.
  • Avoid Hot Liquids: Do not expose the splint to high temperatures, which may deform the material.
  • Regular Check-ups: Visit your dentist every few months to assess the splint’s condition and make adjustments if necessary.
