Tartar Removal – Dental tartar is the enemy of healthy teeth, providing an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive, contributing to gum recession and periodontitis. Therefore, tartar removal (scaling) is one of the most important preventive treatments. It’s worth noting that practically everyone is at risk of plaque and tartar buildup. Coffee, tea, and red wine are just a few factors that contribute to this issue.

Scaling Procedure

Tartar removal should become one of your healthy habits. Scaling at our clinic is performed using modern and highly effective ultrasonic scalers. This method removes tartar not only from the tooth’s crown but also from below the gumline. It is a safe procedure, but it’s essential to follow your dentist’s recommendations. For pregnant women, mechanical tartar removal is advised.

Post-Scaling Care

  • Avoid eating for at least 2 hours after the procedure: This allows the gums to begin healing and reduces the risk of irritation.
  • Avoid staining foods and drinks for 24–48 hours: Beverages like coffee, tea, and red wine, as well as foods that may stain teeth (e.g., berries, beets), can lead to faster plaque buildup.
  • Products containing chlorhexidine (e.g., Eludril Classic, Corsodyl, Alfa-Med) are often recommended for up to 14 days post-deep cleaning to prevent periodontal diseases.

Contraindications

  • Patients with weakened immunity due to chronic illness, recent chemotherapy or radiotherapy, or immunosuppressive medications following transplants.
  • Uncontrolled diabetes.
  • Generalized weakness.
  • Modern pacemakers with titanium casings are resistant to disturbances from ultrasonic scalers.
  • For women in the first trimester of pregnancy, pneumatic scalers that do not generate electromagnetic fields are used (no studies confirm significant risks).

Potential Complications After Scaling

  • Mild sensitivity to cold, sweet, or acidic foods may occur after the procedure. Using desensitizing toothpaste can resolve this issue.
  • Subgingival scaling might cause more discomfort, which typically subsides within 2–3 days.
